Abstract : Despite the growth of the mushroom industry in the Philippines in the 1970s, it appears that progress has been slow since then. It is only since about 1985 that increased production and interest in mushroom cultivation has been noticeable. From the total recorded mushroom production of 900 tons in 1986, it is estimated that the Philippines is presently producing more than 2000 tons of fresh, canned and dried mushrooms per year. The paper briefly describes the situation of the mushroom industry in the Philippines focusing on types of mushroom commercially cultivated, international markets, reasons for slow mushroom development and a list of recommendations to help develop the industry.

food habit and BMI in the Philippines

The Philippines has a diverse food culture, with influences from Chinese, Malay, Spanish, and American cuisines. However, in recent years, there has been a growing concern over the country's high rates of overweight and obesity.

According to a 2020 report by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, nearly 3 in 10 Filipino adults (31.1%) were overweight, while 8.3% were obese. The report also found that the prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher among women than men.

One of the main contributing factors to the high rates of overweight and obesity in the Philippines is a shift in dietary patterns towards more calorie-dense, processed foods, and a decrease in physical activity levels. Many Filipinos also have a preference for sweet and fatty foods, which can lead to overconsumption and weight gain.

BMI, or body mass index, is a commonly used measure of body fat based on height and weight. In the Philippines, a BMI of 25 or above is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 or above is considered obese.

It's worth noting that BMI is not a perfect measure of health, as it doesn't take into account factors like muscle mass or body composition. Nonetheless, it can be a useful tool for assessing overall trends in body weight and health.

In summary, while the Philippines has a rich and diverse food culture, the country is facing a growing problem of overweight and obesity. Factors like dietary changes and decreased physical activity levels are contributing to this trend. Monitoring BMI can be one way to track changes in body weight and overall health.  ...
